Tiasha Tabassum: “Gone with the Wind” got pulled out from HBO MAX for its depiction of racism and depiction of slavery recently. The epic war film has been an apple of discord among the viewers after the BLM movement. Many other media companies also pulled such controversial shows that increase racism.
After the George Floyd incident, the activists has been more vocal against racism. It has triggered anti-racism movements starting from the United States across the world. Now the protesters are forcing media outlets to stop broadcasting racist shows, even those that hint minor racism. Because all these can manipulate people virtually and turn them into racist.
Netflix already removed “Little Britain” from its lineup. Also, ViacomCBS Inc did not renew “Cops” to show solidarity in the protest.
Oscar-winning “Gone with the Wind” is an Oscar-winning film based on a book by Margaret Mitchell. The plot is set on the Civil War and revolves in the southern state of Georgia during the war. A WarnerMedia spokesman opined, “These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible.”
However, the film will return after a thorough discussion on its historical context. The denouncement of all the racist depictions will be made as well.
