A Bangladeshi national in Malaysia has been fined 10,000 ringgit (Tk 2 lakh BDT) and condemned to three-month imprisonment for offering police bribe to release himself.
A court of Emergency Protection Order (EPO) in Kuala Lumpur on Friday fined Md Ariful, 41, the sum and gave him the prison term.
As indicated by the EPO court sources, police in a strike kept him along with 13 cartons of illegal cigarettes from the Jalan Stesen region in Kampung Manggis around 9:00 pm (local time) on September 6.
However, he attempted to give police 50 ringgit as a bribe to release himself.
Afterward, the police filed cases against Ariful for offering police bribe and keeping the cigarettes without having paid tax, the sources included.
Prior this year, several Bangladeshi were fined and jailed for offering police bribe.
