The country’s remittance earning has kept on soaring despite global economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Expatriate Bangladeshis sent home USD 2.15 billion in September, around 45 per cent more than the USD 1.48 billion sent in the very month a year ago.
In August this year, the remittance earning of the country was USD 1.96 billion.
With this, the first three months of the current fiscal year have seen a total remittance earning of about USD 6.5 billion, which is nearly 49 percent higher than in the same period in the previous fiscal.
At a time when the world is reeling from the economic downturn due to the pandemic, the rise in Bangladesh’s remittance earning has puzzled many.
On Thursday, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said, the steps taken by the government to provide stimulus to remittance earners and ease rules and regulations in this regard have resulted in the increase.
Also, about 49 percent remittance earlier used to come through non-banking channels, the minister said, adding that now it was coming through banks due to improved facilities.
