Golam Sarwar, 35, a journalist of Chattogram-based news portal www.ctnews.bd was found unconscious in the Kumira ghat area on Sunday after being missing for four days. He apparently went missing on 29 October, five days after he wrote on land grabbing by an influential local. Currently, he is undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Locals found the journalist adjacent to a canal in Kumira and informed law enforcers. According to witnesses, some miscreants dropped him off from an ambulance. “On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the journalist. He is being taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment,” said Nobel Chakma, Assistant Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).
There were bruises all over his body that spoke of how much torture he had suffered in the past four days. When he gained consciousness, the traumatized journalist started begging, “Bhai please don’t beat me, please, please, I will not write news anymore. I will quit journalism.” He repeated the words out of fear that he was still under the clutches of the oppressors.
The miscreants asked Sarwar to quit journalism and claimed that they would remain unpunished if they kill journalists like him.
Golam Sarwar left his residence for office at Battery Goli in Kazir Dewri area of Chattogram on Thursday morning. Since then his family could not trace him. His phone was also found switched off. Later on, Jubayer Siddiqui, Managing Editor of www.ctnews.bd filed a general diary with Kotwali Police Station.
Sarwar had been kept in a dark room and was tortured by a few masked men daily for the last four days. They put cotton in his ears so that he couldn’t hear any sound. They gave him only water and bread to eat.
