Our Correspondent, PABNA: Workers of and sugarcane growers of Pabna Sugar Mill staged a protest rally on Wednesday morning against the closure of six sugar mills in the country.
Shajhan Ali Badsha president of Federation of sugarcane growers presided a street discussion meeting while Ibrahim Hossain regional Labour leader of labour league, Sajedual Islam president of Pabna Sugar mills workers federation , general secretary Asrafuzzaman and others also spoke from the street meeting and demanding for withdrawing suspended letter in against of 6 sugar mills.
In a memorandum No. 116 of the Ministry of Industries on December 1, it was stated that considering the rate of sugar extraction, sugarcane land, condition / efficiency of the mill, loss and maintenance cost, out of 15 sugar mills in the current sugarcane threshing season, 9 sugar mills should be operated and the remaining 6 mills has suspended for threshing.
This letter was sent from Bangladesh Food and Sugar Industries Corporation to Pabna Sugar Mill on Wednesday morning, December 2, 1919. Before the corporation’s letter reached the Pabna Sugar Mill, the mill officials, workers and sugarcane farmers were informed about the closure of the mill on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the source, in the mills where sugarcane will not be threshed in the current season, the sugarcane produced and supplied by the farmers will be transported to the nearest sugar mill. Some officers and employees will be attached / transferred to the activated mill from the suspended production mill. The letter said plans were afoot to suspend sugarcane threshing at Faridpur Sugar Mill and Rajshahi Sugar Mill along with six other sugar mills in the next season.
Sajedul Islam Shahin, president and Sajedul Islam Shahin, general secretary of Pabna Sugar Mill Workers’ Federation, and Ashrafuzzaman Ujjal, general secretary, said leaders of six sugar mills, including the Sugarcane Farmers Federation, were scheduled to gather in Dhaka on Thursday. From now on the program of the larger movement will be announced.
