Virtual meetings with provincial and territorial counterparts are hosted by the deputy prime minister and finance minister. The Ministers of Finance discussed the ongoing action needed to support Canadians in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tiff Macklem, Governor of the Bank of Canada, who updated ministers on the global and Canadian economic outlook, reflecting the Bank’s recent Monetary Policy Report, began the day’s meeting with a debate.
All agreed that continued coordination across all government orders would be crucial to the virus’ defeat and to a strong, long-term economic recovery. The finance ministers agreed to continue discussions in Canada on financing health care. As the federal government plans for the upcoming federal budget, the Deputy Prime Minister invited all ministers to keep open lines of communication and to share their perspectives on ways to fight the pandemic and ensure a strong economy.
