Commodore Dan Charlebois took over command of the Royal Saudi Navy from Rear Admiral Sulieman Al Faqeeh. Canada will take command of the Naval Task Force for Multinational Counter-Terrorism.
Canada deployed 31 CAF personnel and one civilian employee of the Department of National Defence to Bahrain’s Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) headquarters to lead CTF 150 until July 2021. Operation ARTEMIS is the contribution of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to the multinational task force in Middle Eastern waters conducting maritime security and counter-terrorism operations. In spring 2021, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Calgary is expected to join this deployment of Operation ARTEMIS.
The continued presence of Canada in the Middle East highlights the ongoing commitment of Canada to maritime security in the region and around the world. The CAF will continue to ensure a robust security presence in some of the most difficult and important international waters in the world. CTF 150, a multinational task force dedicated to countering terrorism and promoting maritime security, is Canada’s fifth command. For two decades, from 2001 to 2003, as part of Operation APOLLO, Canada has been part of C TF 150. In 2012, the mission officially changed its name to Operation ARTEMIS, and since then it has been called that. The command contingent in Canada is supported by Royal Australian Navy personnel.
