Blaze Head, an Opaskwayak Cree Nation high school student, is organizing a virtual family ice fishing derby. “After such a tough winter, I really wanted to do something for my community,” Blaze Head said.
Head is a mentor for ten Indigenous youth from across the country through the Green Leaders Program. The project is the first of ten community projects for Indigenous youth that will take place this year. Prizes are awarded in categories including largest fish, most ugly fish, and upholding tradition.
This programme aims at taking people from home to enjoy the open air in the town. After high school, he wants to apply for a welding programme. The fishing derby will take place until March 21st, 2021.
