An eight-year-old girl is safe with her parents after a suspect allegedly tried to abduct her in a schoolyard. Toronto police responded to St. John Vianney Catholic School around 12:30 p.m.
The principal put the school in lockdown immediately, and students were brought inside. The suspect fled towards the Humber River ravine. Police are searching for the suspect, described as a white male in his 20s with a heavy build, with a black balaclava, black baseball cap, black sweatshirt, black pants, and black shoes.
“It’s still unclear at this point whether it’s a targeted act or just a crime of opportunity,” Duty Insp. Michael Williams says. The Toronto Catholic District School Board said in a statement that it is “deeply troubled” by the incident and urged anyone with information to contact police.
The girl was not physically injured, and all children are accounted for, police say. The school is in Etobicoke and other schools in the area were put on hold and secure. “We also encourage families to monitor their child’s behaviour over the next few days,” the school says.
