COVID-19 is having a devastating effect on some young people, as shown in the two images. The lungs of a 30-year-old are depicted in one image and the lungs of a 35-year-old teacher are depicted in the other.
“We’re all surprised at how young these patients are,” Dr. Kashif Pirzada says. The average age of people with active cases in Ontario is now under 60. People aged 20 to 29 account for more than half of the increase in the number of cases.
“People are taking chances, going into crowded places, but they have no idea how bad this is getting,” says the Medical Officer of Health for Peel Region. Some doctors are urging people to take precautions, stay outside as much as possible, and wait a little longer. “You never know how your body will react if you get infected, no matter how old you are,” Loh says.
