More than 2.2 million vaccine doses are expected to arrive in Canada this week as part of a global vaccine-sharing initiative.
Canada has been chastised for undermining the spirit of the COVAX initiative, which aims to ensure that vaccines are distributed equitably to developing countries.
The increased vaccination comes as COVID-19 cases are on the rise across the country. Canada reached a bleak milestone on Saturday, recording more than one million cases of COVID-19 since the virus first appeared in the country in January of last year.
As of Sunday afternoon, 23,043 Canadians had died as a result of the disease. The federal government has promised that by the end of September, every Canadian who wishes to be immunized against the virus will be fully vaccinated.
So far in the first quarter, the country has received 9.5 million doses, exceeding the federal government’s initial promise of 6 million.
