Experts say Ontario has done a good job of administering COVID-19 vaccines so far, despite a limited supply of doses. The province has started Phase 2 of the vaccination plan, which is aimed at people aged 50 and up. According to critics, the variants of concern are spreading much faster than the vaccine rollout.
On Tuesday, Premier Doug Ford hit back at critics, saying that the majority of those doses are already taken. According to Ontario data, the new variants are more transmissible and cause more severe illnesses, making young people more vulnerable to the pandemic.
The current vaccine plan, among other things, targets people over the age of 50 who live in high-risk areas and those who cannot work from home. In Canada, the vaccine is ranked second among provinces and territories, trailing only Saskatchewan.
Premier Ford has stated that the government is developing a plan to vaccinate essential workers and teachers. According to the province’s framework, those workers will not receive their shots until mid-May.
More vaccine deliveries from Ottawa have been requested by the premier. “With both hands tied behind our backs and dribs and drabs of vaccines,” Ford says, “we’re doing more than anyone.” Miller believes that the province should prioritize those who are unable to work safely from home.
