As a result of the pandemic’s rising hospitalizations, Ontario says a COVID-19 field hospital in Toronto could be activated later this month.
According to the Ministry of Health, the mobile health unit at Sunnybrook Hospital will begin accepting patients in the coming weeks. The field hospital, which has been set up in a parking lot at the site, is one of two in the province designed to help address the province’s growing capacity challenges.
According to the province, the temporary beds will increase capacity in the health system overall by freeing up acute and critical care capacity within hospitals.
The government claims that it will also help hospitals increase capacity by allowing them to transfer non-critical care patients to these general medicine beds. This week, Ontario set new records in terms of the number of patients hospitalized and admitted to intensive care units as a result of COVID-19.
