Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet is meeting today in the midst of record-breaking COVID-19 case counts, which have some calling for drastic action to protect Ontario’s healthcare system. On Thursday morning, the Ministry of Health reported a record of 4,736 new cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, along with 29 deaths.
The rolling seven-day average of new infections has increased by nearly 36% in the last week alone, reaching 4,200. Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca told CTV News Toronto on Thursday that “everything should be on the table,” including “things like temporarily shutting down certain parts of the economy or instituting a curfew.”
Earlier on Thursday, Dr. Andrew Boozary, executive director of social medicine at the University Health Network, expressed concern about the situation in an interview with CP24.
He stated that the Ford administration should be doing everything possible right now to get vaccines to “on-fire” neighborhoods, while also supporting essential workers through needed initiatives that they have previously resisted, such as paid sick days.
“What we choose not to do will continue to haunt us, as it has in recent weeks,” he warned.
The province issued a stay-at-home order last week, but the number of cases has continued to rise. Today’s cabinet meeting comes one day before the release of new modelling, which could shed more light on the province’s perilous path.
