Ontario has received 4,447 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, up from 4,250 on Sunday. The health-care system is still overburdened, with an all-time high of 2,202 patients in the hospital. In the last 24 hours, 19 more deaths have been reported as a result of the disease. In the province, there are 42,863 active cases of the disease.
On Friday, the government announced new public health measures to combat the spread of infection. The province of Ontario is currently operating under a stay-at-home order, which was extended by two weeks on Friday and is set to expire on May 20 at the earliest. The number of cases reported in Ontario over the seven-day period is 4,347. That number was 3,781 a week ago, with 4,781 cases reported the previous week.
The total number of deaths is now 7,735, which includes those deaths and 370,844 recoveries, including 2,467 cases of the variant known as B.1.1.7. The province’s test positivity rate reached 10.3 percent today, the highest level since April 2020, when it reached 17%. There are now 36,579 confirmed cases of the variant, which was discovered in the United Kingdom’s province of Ontario. Four more cases of P.1 (Brazilian variant) were discovered, bringing the total number of cases to 211.
