Many people in Toronto’s hotspot postal codes are unable to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine due to vaccine shortages at pop-up clinics. Due to this, some people who waited for hours were turned away. The Ontario government has confirmed that vaccinations will be prioritized in Toronto’s hardest-hit and lower-income neighborhoods.
Lorraine Lendor, a kindergarten teacher, said, “We’re frustrated; we don’t know where to go.” According to ICSI results, the gap between vaccination rates in hotspots and those in prosperous areas is narrowing. “I feel like I would have to sleep in my car and just wait for a vaccine,” Lendor added.
Many of the regions with the highest transmission rates also have much lower vaccination rates than more prosperous areas. Lendor believes that hotspot areas, such as her M1J zip code, should have multiple pop-up clinics. This delay may cost the city if the transmissions are not kept in check, while several people are outside waiting to get vaccinated.
