The first 300,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine are expected to arrive in Canada today, according to a federal official.
The official, who requested anonymity to discuss matters that have not yet been made public, said the government is not disclosing the source of the doses because it needs to “protect this new vaccine supply chain.”
Even in the United States, J&J has struggled with production issues and has only been able to deliver a few doses. Canada has purchased 10 million doses and has the option to purchase an additional 28 million. The doses are expected to be distributed next week to provinces.
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization has not yet provided guidance on how the vaccine should be used in conjunction with the other three currently in use.
Pfizer-BioNTech’s delivery of slightly more than one million doses this week has already arrived in Canada.
A delayed shipment of approximately 650,000 doses from Moderna is also currently on the way to Canada.
