Shomporko Online News Desk: School in Ontario will not reopen to in-person learning until the fall, according to Premier Doug Ford.
On Wednesday afternoon, Ford made the announcement alongside Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Health Minister Christine Elliott.
The announcement comes despite the Ford government’s frequent assertions that schools are secure and that pupils should spend as much time as possible in class.
Ford said on Wednesday that reopening schools until more instructors and pupils are vaccinated might result in “thousands” of new cases, according to modeling.
Students in Ontario have been doing online learning since April 19, when the pandemic’s third wave hit the province.
COVID-19 cases have dropped off significantly in Ontario in recent weeks with less than 1,000 new cases being reported over each of the past three days.
The seven-day average of new daily cases is now below 1,000 for the first time since early November.
The schools announcement also comes as Ontario’s stay-at-home order lifts, but most other public health measures remain in place, like the five-person limit on outdoor gatherings and restrictions on in-person retail.
The province is aiming to start reopening the economy later this month with looser rules on businesses and outdoor activities.
