Shomporko Online News Desk: By the end of this week, Canada should have enough COVID-19 vaccine to fully inoculate three-quarters of all Canadians over the age of 12.
Pfizer-BioNTech will send about 2.4 million doses this week, while Moderna will send roughly 1.4 million, according to Brig. Gen. Krista Brodie, the military officer overseeing national vaccine delivery operations for the Public Health Agency of Canada.
These shipments will bring Canada’s overall vaccination deliveries to more than 50 million doses, enough to give two shots to 75% of eligible residents.
Another 18 million doses are expected in July, enough to fully vaccinate all 33.2 million Canadians over the age of 12.
Children under that threshold won’t be able to get immunized until trials testing the vaccines on younger children are completed later this summer or in the fall.
As of Sunday, more than 25.5 million residents had received at least one dose, and Canada is on the verge of hitting 10 million people fully vaccinated.
Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam joined the ranks of the fully vaccinated on the weekend, getting her second dose Saturday at a public health clinic at the University of Ottawa.
“Thrilled to receive my 2nd COVID19 vaccine dose today,” Tam said in a tweet.
Tam said she got an injection of Moderna’s vaccine for her second dose after receiving her first dose of Pfizer in mid-April. Millions of Canadians are now mixing vaccines based on what’s available and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s recommendations.
Even before this week’s planned shipments arrive, Canada has a supply of around seven million immunizations that have been provided but not yet utilized.
Vaccination efforts have also reached a new high in recent days, with over 470,000 doses administered each day on average during the last week.
More than 86 percent of the doses were given to those who were getting a second shot.
