A planned in-person vigil in Ottawa to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting, which left six men dead and five others gravely injured, has been canceled.
On Jan. 29, 2017, a lone gunman opened fire and killed six attendees immediately after the finish of evening prayers.
An interfaith candlelight vigil had been planned for tonight at a human rights monument at Ottawa City Hall, a few blocks south of Parliament Hill, by Canadians United Against Hate.
Because of the truckers’ protest in downtown Ottawa and threats of violence from some attendees, the group has decided to stage a virtual vigil.
The Ottawa event is one of many put on by community organizations.
The festivities take place on the first National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Islamophobia, which was declared last April in the aftermath of the Quebec City Mosque Attack.
