The allegation against a suspect in the death of a Toronto man last week has been raised from aggravated assault to second-degree murder, according to police.
Police were called to the area of Grandravine and Futura drives in Toronto’s Jane and Finch district at 8:35 a.m. on Feb. 10 to investigate a possible sudden death. According to authorities, a male had slumped and was presumed to be deceased at the time.
Officers arrived on scene and located a man who they said had obvious signs of trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two days later, police identified the victim as 59-year-old Toronto resident Jorge Zapata. He is the city’s 11th homicide victim of the year.
In connection with the incident, Jorge Langevin, 37, of Toronto, was detained and charged with aggravated assault.
The accusation was escalated to second-degree murder, according to a news release released by police on Wednesday. On Tuesday, he appeared in a Toronto courtroom.
The nature of Zapata’s relationship with Langevin, if any, has not been revealed by authorities.
