The number of COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals continues to climb, with nine new deaths reported in the province on Saturday.
According to the Ministry of Health, 855 persons with the virus are currently hospitalized in Ontario hospitals, up from 805 yesterday and 707 a week ago. Today is the month’s highest number of COVID-19 hospitalizations.
According to the ministry, 49% of patients were admitted for COVID-19, while 51% were admitted for another reason but later tested positive for the virus.
Of the current hospitalizations, 165 patients are in intensive care, down two from yesterday but up eight from a week ago.
Seventy-one per cent of ICU patients were admitted for COVID-19 and 29 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.
The ministry reported nine more virus-related deaths today, with seven occurring in the past month and two happening more than a month ago.
Since March 2020, the province says there have been 12,460 COVID-19 deaths.
According to the government, Ontario laboratories processed 16,000 tests in the last 24 hours, resulting in a positivity rate of 17.1%, up from 13.5 percent a week ago.
Another 3,233 cases were reported today by the province, although health experts think this is an underestimate owing to insufficient testing.
In the most recent cases, 1,176 people have had three doses of COVID-19 vaccine, 864 have had two doses, 441 have been partially vaccinated, and 152 have not been vaccinated.
To far, more than 89 percent of Ontarians aged five and above have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, 86% have received two doses, and 51% have received three doses.
