A Chinese spacecraft orbits Mars on an expedition on a surface rover. China’s space agency says its engine was fired by the orbiter and rover to decrease its speed, enabling it to be captured by the gravity of Mars. Even China, which has accumulated constant achievements, has a courageous mission. If everything happens as scheduled, the rover will be safely separated from the spaceship in a few months.
It will collect underground water data and look for evidence that microscopic life may once have been harboured by Mars. The U.S. has successfully touched down eight times on Mars, beginning in the 1970s with two Viking missions. A parachute, rocket shots, airbags and a parachute will be involved in the Chinese mission.
A NASA rover called Perseverance aims for a landing on the moon on Feb 18. They, too, are going to look for signs of ancient microscopic life. A series of achievements has been racked up by China’s secret, military-linked space program. For the first time since the 1970s, it brought moon rocks back to Earth in December.
