Shomporko Desk:-India now has the world’s third-highest tally of coronavirus cases, surpassing Russia as it’s absolute hopped to more than 697,000.
The health ministry reported more than 23,000 new cases on Monday, down somewhat from a record increase of just about 25,000 the day before but continuing with a pattern of including at any rate 20,000 cases per day since Thursday.
It comes as India’s healthcare system showed growing signs of strain from the pandemic, with a spate of occurrences the nation over of Covid-19 patients dying after being turned away from multiple hospitals.
There have been almost 20,000 deaths in India since the first case was detected there in January.
Total Covid-19 cases recorded in India were 6,97,887 late on Sunday, as per data collated from state governments. During the course of the day, the count went past Russia’s current caseload of 6,81,251, as per the Worldometers website.
India is now the world’s third worst-affected country, behind only the United States and Brazil.
It has seen eight times the number of cases as China, which has a similar-sized population and where the virus originated late last year.
Officials said they had reversed a decision to reopen the Taj Mahal, India’s most famous tourist attraction, in the city of Agra, 200 kilometres southeast of New Delhi, on Monday, following a spate of new cases in the area.
