Documents obtained by CBC News show that Ontario did not adequately prepare the long-term care sector for the risks posed by COVID-19. The documents add to the evidence that the provincial government paid far too little attention to preparing the long-term care sector.
“They were the last in line for personal protective equipment,” said Dr. Nathan Stall, a geriatrician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. As per Vivian Stamatopoulos, an advocate for long-term care residents and their families, Ontario’s Ministry of Long-Term Care has not developed an emergency plan to prepare for a pandemic. The province’s open-records laws provide additional evidence that Ontario’s long-term care homes were unprepared for the pandemic.
