Canada strongly condemns the military’s use of force against protestors in Myanmar today, which has resulted in the deaths of over 100 people. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, as well as the people of Myanmar, who continue to fight for democracy valiantly.
The junta’s actions confirm what the rest of the world already knows: the military’s brutal seizure of the country’s governance is completely illegal.
Canada and its international partners are keeping a close eye on the situation, and those responsible will be held accountable.
We call on the international community, including the United Nations and our ASEAN friends, to intervene immediately to help stop this senseless violence and prevent more civilian deaths, hold perpetrators accountable, and help Myanmar’s people re-establish democracy, as demanded by the people.
Canada stands in solidarity with Myanmar’s people.
