On Monday, Ontario’s top doctor announced that the pandemic has entered its third wave. Alberta and British Columbia have yet to make it official because their infection rates are still rising.
According to Dr. Abdu Sharkawy, the virus is wreaking havoc in places where it was previously well-managed. “We’re witnessing a bit of a perfect storm right now,” he says. He said of public health restrictions, “There’s an element of fatigue that has seeped into our practices.” “We’re seeing this disease develop in younger, healthier people because they aren’t vaccinated,” Sharkawy said. “You never know where you’ll end up on that dial,” he continued, “and unfortunately, we’re seeing some pretty tragic consequences of that.”
According to infectious disease experts, the third wave will most likely be worse than the first two. Vaccines, he claims, are the most important factor in stemming the tide. A lockdown will almost certainly be necessary until enough vaccines are available to stop the spread. He says, “I can’t see any other way of dealing with this; it’s simply not tenable.”
