A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared on an inpatient unit at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, which specializes in paediatric medicine and respirology.
According to the hospital, two patients have tested positive for COVID-19 during their admission to the unit since May 16. The hospital said it made the decision to declare the outbreak on Thursday in collaboration with Toronto Public Health. In some cases, the threshold for declaring a COVID-19 outbreak is as low as one case. In a statement, the hospital said, “SickKids is actively investigating how the virus was transmitted and is working closely with TPH.”
“Everyone who may have been exposed or may have been suspected of being exposed has been notified.”
The risk to patients, families, and staff, according to the hospital, is considered low. The outbreak is unrelated to the admission of adult COVID-19 patients.
