According to police, a Muslim prayer area at Toronto Pearson Airport Terminal 3 was vandalized, and the incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime.
The vandalism was discovered by witnesses at the terminal’s Aviation Interfaith Ministry on Friday evening, according to Peel Regional Police. On Level 1, there is an interfaith chapel.
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) condemned the incident in a statement, calling it “deplorable” and “any acts that attempt to erode freedom of belief and expression.”
“Toronto Pearson is a physical space that represents the diverse beliefs, opinions, and perspectives that make Canada a great nation—a place that connects Canada to the world and brings the world to our country’s doorstep,” the GTAA said in a statement. In the investigation, the airport said it is working with Peel police.
“To everyone arriving at Toronto Pearson today for essential purposes, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters, we ask that you do not let the actions of a few overshadow the values that Canadians hold dear,” the GTAA said. “You are respected, and your convictions benefit us all.”
