Bangladesh witnesses sudden surge in corona deaths

Bangladesh on Thursday witnessed a sudden surge in Covid-19 fatalities, with 37 deaths in a single day, but a downward trend in active cases, with some 1,861 people testing positive for the virus in the past 24 hours, health authorities said.

The mortality rate, however, is still at 1.43%, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

While the death toll now stands at 6,967, the number of people infected with Covid has reached 4,85,965. So far, some 410,452 patients (84.86%), including 4,486 new ones, have recovered in the past 24 hours, as per the health data.

Bangladesh reported its first case on March 8. And the first death was reported on March 18. The death toll exceeded 6,000 on November 4.

Until now, 2,927,929 tests have been carried out, including 16,265 new ones, and 16.60% of the patients turned out to be positive.

Bangladesh is seeing 2,853.47 infections, 2,410.08 recoveries, and 40.91 deaths per million, according to the health authorities.

The global caseload stood at 68,848,383 with 1,568,734 fatalities on Thursday. The United States recorded 15,384,264 cases as of Thursday morning, with 289,257 deaths. The total number of Covid-19 cases in the US topped 15 million on Tuesday.
