Farhana Khan:- It’s very scary when a loved one tries to manipulate you emotionally. Physically, we often recover from bodily harm due to abuse or violence, but somehow we never recover from emotional damage, especially damage that’s inflicted by a loved one.

Today Shomporko has taken a statement with one of our Bangladeshi -Canadian businessmen, Mr. Hisham Chishti, and how Mr.Chishti has been the victim of domestic & financial fraud by his spouse & in-laws.

I Hisham Chishti, is a Bangladeshi-Canadian businessman, social worker and politician. “In 2018, I met actress Toma Mirza through singer Swapnil Sajib. After talking on the phone for a few months, we got married in May 2019. After marriage, the burden of running her household fell on me. I did not object to that. Before marriage, I was told she had never been married before. I later found out that she had been married twice before. Pictures of her previous marriage were sent to me from various sources. After hearing this news, I was broken, but in the interest of keeping the family alive, I couldn’t come to terms with this.

A few days later her mother told me that they did not want to be financially dependent on me. They have shares in a gold shop, if I lend them Rs 20 lakh – they will invest that money in business and they will not have to depend on me for household expenses. Although I objected at first, under the pressure of my wife, I lent the money. Even after giving money, their demand did not decrease. Every month they take money from me for household expenses, out of household expenses, they continue to ask for money with various excuses like brother’s tutor expenses, parent medical treatment, dog food expenses etc.

In this situation, I came to Bangladesh last August. After coming to Bangladesh, 3 lakh Taka was taken from me in the name of fixing the house. The main reason I came to the country was to stay with my sick mother suffering from covid and to treat her (My mother died a few days ago). That’s why after landing in Bangladesh I went to my mom’s house. But Toma (My wife) did not agree to stay with me at my mother’s house. Because of that reason, the tension started between us. In the meantime, their demand for money continued to grow. In the meantime I realized that the 20 lakh Taka I lent to them was not spent in any business, the money was wasted on luxuries. I ask them how they spent that money and tell them that I will take Toma to Canada and they will not be given anything other than a certain amount of money per month for their family expenses. Neither Toma nor her family agreed with me. The problem between us is obvious and I have not decided to divorce. A week after she was informed, her family contacted my family and asked them to make a compromise without breaking up the family.

My family didn’t want the world to break up either, so after so much, they asked me to compromise. In this situation, on the night of December 4, Tama called me and cried and told me to go to her house and settle the matter. Believing her, I went to their house that night. After going to their house I see that her mother, father, brother and driver are present in the drawing-room. Her mother told me that their family depends on her. If I want to take Toma to Canada, I have to pay Rs 20 lakh Taka now and send Rs 4 lakh Taka per month. then I tell them that it is not possible for me to give them this money, and I laid down an ultimatum that if they do not let Toma go with me then I want a divorce.

Then my father-in-law and mother-in-law started insulting me. When I protested, his mother suddenly hit me on the head with a heavy glass vase. My head immediately exploded and I fell to the ground. Toma, her brother and the driver dragged me out of the house and kept hitting me with iron chairs, glasses and various other things. Her father wrapped a scarf around my neck. When the people around me came out shouting at them, they left me outside and went home.

Various bystanders and my driver grabbed me and took me to the hospital. After being in the hospital for 24 hours, I went to the local police station the next evening to file a case., but the police refused to take the case that night, they took the case the next day. This is the real situation between us. My concussion was due to their blunt hits to my head, my arm was broken into two pieces. According to the doctor, this injury could have killed me and I am not safe yet. I quickly moved to Canada for treatment. I have all kinds of paperwork for hospital treatment in Canada and Bangladesh. In the meantime, I came to know that Tama Mirza has also filed a false case in my name. I don’t want to talk too much about the matter under trial, but anyone who knows me at all can understand that their case is fabricated and baseless.

I am financially supported by the infinite mercy of Allah. I have a business in Canada, I am involved in mainstream politics. I go forward as a sponsor of any event of the Bengali community here. Excluding the account of the lakhs of Taka sent to her every month, Toma herself has posted many pictures of my most expensive gifts on her Facebook countless times. In the last year, I have taken her to America, Oman and Dubai and I know how much money has been spent on tickets, accommodation and gifts. The allegations of the dowry brought by them are completely ridiculous and baseless. Their sole purpose in marrying Toma to me was money and Canadian citizenship. I am a victim of abuse and fraud and I want others to learn from my experience and trauma.” – Hisham Chishti
