Shomporko Online News Desk: China’s expanding authoritarianism and coercive diplomacy, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau, pose a threat to democratic governments around the world, including Canada.

Canada and other democracies are dealing with how to reconcile their business, security, and human-rights interests with China, Garneau told a parliamentary committee this evening.

China’s expanding authoritarianism and coercive diplomacy, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau, pose a threat to democratic governments around the world, including Canada.

Garneau is telling a parliamentary committee this evening that Canada and other democracies are grappling with the question of how they reconcile their business, security, and human-rights objectives with China.

The men, dubbed the “two Michaels,” were apprehended in December 2018, just days after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada in response to a US extradition request.

According to Garneau, both men had virtual visits from consular personnel two weeks ago, but China has denied consular access to other Canadian citizens detained in the country.

He believes China should grant consular access to Huseyin Celil so that Canada can confirm his safety.

Celil is a former Uyghur activist who was imprisoned in China for 15 years before settling in southern Ontario after becoming a Canadian citizen.
