Shomporko Desk: The death toll from the new coronavirus has surpassed 5,000 in Europe, the new epicentre of the pandemic, with Italy, Spain and Germany reporting a steep rise in infections, and as worldwide fatalities surged past 11,000. Italy announced 627 more deaths on Friday, the biggest day-to-day increase in the country’s four-week epidemic, a day after surpassing China’s death toll. The total number of deaths in Italy has now reached 4,032. Spain’s death toll has also increased to more than 1,000, while in Iran, the number on fatalities hit another grim milestone of more than 1,400, as the country marks the beginning of the Persian New Year.

Young people are not immune from coronavirus and must avoid socializing and communicating it to older, more vulnerable people, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned. The choices made by the young can be “the difference between life and death for someone else”, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. Over 11,000 patients have died from Covid-19 respiratory illness worldwide. Nearly 250,000 patients have tested positive overall. The WHO chief’s remarks follow reports that young people in many countries are being complacent about health warnings, because of the greater susceptibility to the virus among older patients.

Health officials in British Columbia announced 77 new cases of the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 Friday, bringing the provincial total to 348 and raising Canada’s nationwide total across the 1,000 marks. Of B.C.’s cases, 22 are currently in hospital, said provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry. Some 10 of those cases are in intensive care units, she said. Additionally, some two dozen health care workers in B.C. have tested positive for COVID-19, Henry said. China is stepping up measures to prevent coronavirus cases being imported back from other virus-hit nations, as the outbreak slows within the country but picks up speed across the world. The deadly virus has spread to more than 75 countries and territories worldwide since emerging from China late last year. The number of new daily cases reported outside China has now far exceeded the number of infections announced each day within the country. Despite the decline of new cases, Chinese authorities are on high alert following an uptick of imported cases from overseas since last week.
