Sonia Hoque:– Last Friday the rapper Nicki Minaj, 38 had lost her father Robert Maraj, 64 who had been killed in a hit and run accident in Long Island.
According to TMZ, Nassau County Police said that he was hit by a vehicle in Mineola around 6 pm; the witnesses were unable to provide the police with a description of the suspect and the case remains under investigation. Unfortunately, Maraj had later succumbed to his injuries and died in a local hospital. Minaj had been open about her and her mother’s estranged relationship with her father in the past; detailing the abuse both had faced and his struggle with drugs and alcohol.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, she had mentioned the fear that had been instilled in her since childhood for not only herself but as well for her beloved mother. “I was disappointed in my father, I just wanted him to be a daddy and be the happy person that I remembered, and I was afraid, very afraid, that something bad would happen to my mother. I had nightmares about it”. Minaj had also recounted a time in her song “autobiography” where her father had even tried to burn down the house with her mother still in it as she raps “Daddy was a crack friend, two in the morning. Had us running down the block like a track team. When you burnt the house down and my mother was in it. How could I forget it? The pain is infinite. She’s my queen and I ain’t even British”. Though a few too many years later, despite her troubled childhood and the trauma she been through, it had seemed that the two had reconciled.
Giving their relationship a shot at another chance as Maraj had finally decided to better himself as she mentions in an interview with the Guardian in 2013. “He went to rehab and cleaned himself up. Eventually, my parents started going to church a lot, and he got saved and started changing his life.” “He’s away from drugs now and doesn’t instill fear in people anymore”. Having been through so much in her life she remains her strength and vows she’d never allow a man to treat her that way, as she mentions in an interview “I vowed that I’d never allowed any man to control me or to be an alcoholic or anything like that around me because I don’t want my children seeing that”. Not only is she a great rapper her strength is remarkable and no doubt she will be able to pull herself and her mother out of yet another painful incident. Though they have yet to publicly speak about his death we surely hope they get past this and give our condolences to her and her family.
