At least 5,431 people were killed and 7,379 people injured in 4,735 road accidents across the country in the last year, Road Safety Foundation, a non-government organisation, said today.

Of the deceased, 871 were women and 649 were children, said a press release issued by the foundation.

At least 1,463 people died in 1,378 motorcycle accidents, which accounted for 26.93 percent of the total deaths, said the press release signed by the foundation’s Executive Director Saidur Rahman.

Some 1,512 pedestrians were killed and 683 drivers and assistants to drivers were killed during the time.

At least 272 people were killed and 137 injured in 119 waterway accidents while 228 were killed and 54 injured in 108 train accidents.

Road Safety Foundation collected the data based on reports in seven national dailies, five online news portals and electronic media.
