The New Democrats of Ontario are calling on the Conservative Progressive Government not to cancel March Break. Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, said the government was exploring whether the break would be cancelled. A decision on the break should be communicated sooner rather than later, Education Critic Marit Stiles said.
On Monday, students returned to in-person learning at 13 public health units in southern Ontario. Toronto, Peel Region and York Region schools are scheduled to reopen on Feb. 16 after the long weekend of Family Day. It is unclear if, during the extended winter break in January, the government will cancel the break to help students catch up on learning that they may have missed. The Minister of Health says that medical advice will make the final decision and is based on the best interest of public health.
After a three-day break, the three areas still grappling to contain the spread of COVID-19 will reopen on February 16. In most parts of the province, the virus has been declared eliminated, but some areas are still experiencing high infection levels. As a result of the outbreak, it has been estimated that more than 1,200 people died.
