Shomporko Online News Desk: Following the revelation of a video that appears to show a Montreal police officer placing his knee on a Black youth’s neck during an arrest, some Quebec legislators have called for an investigation.
The minute-and-a-half-long video has sparked outrage on social media, with some people claiming that the visuals remind those of George Floyd, who died last year in Minneapolis after a white police officer crushed and held a knee on his neck.
Two officers are shown kneeling over a young Black male who is lying on the ground in front of a bus stop, one pressing his knees on the person’s neck and shoulders.
Quebec Premier François Legault said today that he was troubled by a photo of the arrest and that his government will follow up with Montreal police to see how similar incidents can be avoided in the future.
The photographs were described as “worrying” by Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante’s office, which said a police investigation was underway to determine the facts surrounding the footage.
The circumstances leading up to the arrest are not seen in the video, but according to police, it happened last week after cops were asked to interfere in a dispute outside a high school involving more than a dozen young people.
