A man was killed in a police-involved shooting in Markham on Friday night, prompting an investigation by the province’s police watchdog.
According to the Special Investigations Unit, a York Regional Police officer on patrol saw a man outside a vehicle in a retail mall at Fairburn Drive and Highway 7 at 9:15 p.m. (SIU).
According to the SIU, there was a confrontation and the male was shot as a result.
According to authorities, the man was taken to the hospital but died as a result of his injuries.
A woman was arrested at the scene for firearms related offences. She was not injured.
The SIU has invoked its mandate.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
