The contract to renew 5 Wing Goose Bay’s existing Wing support services and facilities maintenance contract was awarded on March 12 by Public Services and Procurement Canada. This 10-year contract is worth $694 million, with two five-year extension options worth up to $1.5 billion over 20 years. Serco Canada Inc. of Happy Valley-Goose Bay was awarded the contract, which is expected to provide significant economic opportunities for the region by sustaining approximately 250 jobs over a 10-year period.

This contract’s work will continue to include a wide range of real estate and operational support services. This includes support for airfield operations, as well as general maintenance and day-to-day management of the Wing’s buildings, grounds, and infrastructure. All aspects of Wing operations, as well as core administrative and financial matters, will be overseen by the CAF and the Department of National Defence (DND).

The Department of Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are committed to responsibly managing defence infrastructure, and will continue to ensure that personnel have well-maintained facilities that enable them to perform the tasks that are required of them today and in the future.

Quotes

“Our Defence Team members deserve well-maintained facilities to train and operate effectively. This contract helps guarantee that 5 Wing Goose Bay’s facilities are well-kept and, importantly, that the Wing is well-functioning, so our personnel can continue to carry out the important work that we ask of them. This contract will ensure the success of 5 Wing Goose Bay operations for years to come.”- The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence “This contract will ensure that the Canadian Armed Forces members at Goose Bay will have the well-maintained infrastructure and operational support to carry out their important work on behalf of Canadians. This investment is expected to create and support local jobs including a portion for Indigenous community.”-

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Public Services and Procurement

“The Canadian Armed Forces is an integral part of the Goose Bay community and this contract is a great economic opportunity for the region. This important investment in infrastructure supports our military and will create good jobs and strong economic opportunities for Labrador.”- Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador.

Quick facts

This contract includes an Indigenous Benefits Plan, which will allocate $100 million to Indigenous peoples’ employment and training opportunities.

Since 1998, the private sector has provided these operational support services, as well as the maintenance and operation of the Wing’s facilities, infrastructure, and airfield.

This private-sector partnership will supplement our existing real-estate workforce and will not affect the jobs of indefinitely employed DND personnel.

5 Wing Goose Bay is responsible for a wide range of military operations, including joint training for the Canadian Armed Forces, our Allies, and NORAD.
